Hello All,

hope some may be able to help i have a 2002 galaxy 1.9 TDi which has recently lost all power in the top end, it will drive around town and small back roads ok but on the motorway or up any sort of incline it struggles to get to 55mph and takes a long time to get to that.

After searching various forums such as this it seems the most likely cu;prits are 1. MAF sensor or 2. Turbo waste gate/vanes coked.

I have had the car serviced and it had new air ,oil & fuel filters, i have tried running car with MAF unplugged but this seemed to make no difference, i think replacing MAF is next step but they are at least

Probably MAF sensor. Classic symptoms and correct test.

Shop around - most dealers (try VW/SEAT) do them at

Will try the local VW dealer, after looking through various posts i have come up with a some questions, Haynes don't do manual for my model so i am a bit thick on subject, i wounder if anyone can point me in right direction ?

  1. What is a PD power unit and how do i tell if mine is one ?
  2. Should i be using synthetic oil to protect the turbo and avoid the dreaded coking ?
  3. Is there any other type of service manual for 2002 galaxy Haynes don't do one) ?

Thanks All

Hello Charles,

Two years ago I had exact the same problem on my 2001 1.9 TDi. As I'm not much of a mechanic, I left the car at my local Ford authorized repair shop. They started changing this part, that part and so on. Finally , they claimed that the problem was solved. It turned out, it was not. After a short test drive, the mechanic changed a sensor connected to the throttle pedal, and ...tadaaa... it worked.

So, after trying (blindly, in my opinion) parts worth SEK 3000 (approx.

I have just tried un reg version of VAG-COM which is showing 17965 Overpressure & 17552 MAF error does anyone know if this sheds any light ?

17965 points to the turbo......I would first check all associated piping and tubes to make sure none of them are damaged/ loose.

17552 may just be a log of the fact that the MAF had not been working at some time....obviously when it was disconnected....try clearing it and see if it comes back

I have tried a new MAF unit = No GOOD still no power. Will try and check hoses and turbo waste gate operation next which will be fun as i cant even locate them, they must be tucked behind engine somewhere !

This problem may be caused by moisture ingress into the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. This can cause a reduced supply of intake air and therefore a loss of power. The solution is to fit a revised intake air duct and a new MAF sensor. A revised intake air duct has been used in production.
